  Time for a chat?

  every year about around christmas i get a knock on my door from jehovah?s witnesses.

  this is not something i discourage or dislike.

  i believe encouraging debate on important issues is almost frowned on in western culture, and i genuinely enjoy the chance to discuss and learn.

  I also appreciate a good debate.

  However; you will not find that here on this website. As has been posted above; this is a support group for X JWs.

  I doubt you will find a rational intellectual debate with any practicing Jehovahs Witnesses either. You see; they believe that they are right; and are committed to that end. Nothing you say or do will convince them of your point of view. They are right and YOU ARE WRONG. That is the philosophy which built that religion. It is one sided and negative.

  chanced upon this website a few days ago, and perhaps spent most of my waking hours (since then) reading, and certainly identifying with, quite a lot of it.

  i have also learned a few things i was unaware of - i know this is ''old hat'' to all of you, but i wasn't aware of the un ngo thing.. i was saddened reading many posts - mostly trying to get human compassion (from elders who hold the trump cards - dealt by....?).

  i read with interest josephus's post no.313, and goldminer's 1st posting - both drawing attention to how lives have been wasted due to false prohesy - and i thought (after reading how the society is claiming compensation for surviving - or dead!

  High rates of depression in Org.

  i noticed after being a jw for a while that many members of my congregation were having to take antedepressants.

  (i counted at least 30 out of 100).

  after a few years i too began to have bouts of depression and problems with anxiety.

  Tempers A Flare at "Quick Builds"

  have any of you noticed that when "quick built", kh.

  were being done that many tempers flared amongst brothers.

  some were vicious and cruel and rude.

  No, not by brothers. However this type of treatment is standard fare in the construction trade. As an architect, I have occasion to be on construction sites all the time. I am continually appalled at how ruthless the construction trades are.

  Is It Just The Brits Who Make Jokes About Disasters?

  the tsunami jokes have started already.

  perfectly nice people listen to the latest disaster joke, clap their hands over their mouths as though they were aghast with horror, then bray with laughter before filing it to memory so that they can pass the joke on to their friends.

  many say it is the british way of coping with adversity, if you laugh at disaster it has no power over you.

  I agree that it depends on the circustance; degree of pressure one is under ; and that laughing could be a way to cope.

  As for the British doing some laughing; I suspect Prince Harry is not laughing at this moment; too bad the tabloids have to be so tough on the kid.

  yes, this was also my experience.

  When I broke away form the "truth" I experienced severe depression. Fortunate for me I had an excellent therapist who treated me with masses doses of vitamins; austere diet region and physical excercise No drugs.

  What was also invaluble for the emergence from depression was the making of new non JW friends and new positive experiences in my life.

  problems with JW girlfriend and her family

  i'll make this short, but i've been looking for answers and need actual human communication- not just a book or website.. up until 12/26/04, my "girlfriend" and i had been sneaking around to see each other.

  we became professionals.

  she would always say "i shouldn't be doing this" and such, but eventually that mindset wore away and our love took over.

  ...there is no easy solution for you....certainly nothing that can be communicated through this thread. So take all of our collective advice her ; do not get involved with this religion.

  As previous posters have said...don't do this to yourself.

  Remember, anyone who gives ultimatums is showing signs of underlying serious "issues". In this case the "issue" is control. Her parents are trying to control YOU. She is their underage daughter; still living at home.

  YOU however; are not. Don't get involved with their games or the influence of this religion.

  If this is TRUE love; LET HER STAND UP TO HER PARENTS; making her own decision; and come to you.

  To fade or not to fade--Judicial question.

  i just got off the phone with one of the elders.

  they said that if i do go to the jc and ask them to help me understand why they believe certain stuff and then ask for a study i will probably not get df'd.

  i can "bow" down to them and do their little game if the results would help my family.. i love my family very much.

  Freedom frog,

  You are in a bad situation---we do not want you to make it WORSE for yourself AT THIS TIME in your life.

  Your post said you are close with your family--that is good. If you still live at home, it may be excrutiating for you to break from the religion and have to deal with a disfellowshipping; and the subsequent dissaproval from your family.

  I suggest a different strategy to you; more appropriate to you at this phase of your life. "Yes" them all. Do what ever you have to do to please them all to stay in good standing.

  Your post did not say if you are a student; high school or college.

  I suggest you wait until you move out of your parents house; away from their daily influence; to make the break from the religion. It will be easier for you to cope with. Also, go see a competent counseler or therapist to help you deal with the transition you will go through.

  Jehovah the God Of Tupperware

  saw an interesting show on tv a few weeks ago: the history of the tupperware firm.

  amazing program.

  anyway it struck me that i could have been watching a tv show on the history of the watchtower.

  Interesting post; and very funny

  I never heard this about Tupperware. I had heard about the Mary Kay cosmetic line; Avon and Amway.

  At least with the Mary Kay Cosmetics; their top saleswomen recieved a pink Cadillac convertible; Jehovahs Witnesses got NOTHING...
